History of San Francisco International Airport
Although San Francisco Airport is located in incorporated San Mateo country, it is owned and operated by San Francisco’s City and County. Initially, the City and County of San Francisco leased 150 acres to the SFO site. Later, in the year 1930, San Francisco purchased the property and the surrounding area which is approximately 1,112 acres. The name Mills Field Municipal Airport of San Francisco was officially changed to San Francisco International Airport in 1931 when the land on lease was finally purchased by San Francisco.
